Alchemy, naturally

My name is Orla Broderick and I am Irish. I left Ireland in 1990 to train as a nurse in England. I have been interested in nature and the natural world all my life, as well as environmental science. I am passionate about recycling, reducing waste, carbon emissions and basically doing the kindest thing in every waking moment. I started writing about ten years ago and have had several editing and ghost writing jobs, so, when I successfully got the editing for an aromatherapist, I was actually really pleased. I loved reading and studying the science in the books I was editing. The author has almost forty years experience of working in the cosmetics world – but using natural ingredients in products. He has managed to replace the world of high-cost cosmetics with a real, genuinely natural alternative.
Imagine the world we would have if we all used naturally sourced, fairly traded, cruelty free beauty products and skin treatments.
Imagine if we all made our own shampoos, creams, toothpastes and moisturisers, at home, at our kitchen tables?
The man who taught me this remarkable, wonderful, revolutionary alchemy wishes to teach all of us how to nourish, protect, cleanse and soothe our skin using plant based raw materials.

I loved this idea. I was hooked. I fell in love with him, just a little bit. By the time he asked me to help him test some recipes, I was already familiar with different types of oils, mineral, vitamins and how they were used. And, because I was reading and editing his books, I knew exactly where he found his ingredients and why he chose them. He only used the very best he could source. He scoured the world sourcing the finest oils, minerals, extracts and materials and then he dedicated years to mixing them, watching how they worked and treating his family and friends.
He showed me how to drop one oil into another, how to watch the colours blend and gleam. I loved it. From the first product, I was in heaven. It is such a beautiful process, such a creative thing to do and with softer, clearer gorgeous skin as the end result? Well, I am in!
I eat, sleep and dream about mixing oils into each other. It’s like a drug, once you start you can’t stop. It makes me feel so good to offer a serum to a friend and watch the results on their skin.
I hope it makes you feel good too!
